Reid, turbanage was all the rage in 18th-century Scottland. (It stemmed from a prevalent, but only semi-justified, worry about an imminent, massive influx of Sikhs.)

The exotic headgear was also quite popular with French philosophes at the same time: Voltaire
Perhaps it was an attempt to keep the head warm while thinking big thoughts in cold climates.
