The mere fact that this is a common mistake, and has been for some time does not change the rule. I blame the Academy Awards for the current deplorable state of men's formal and semiformal attire. There is certainly a place for creativity in dressing, but it isn't in fancy dress. Her Ladyship should at least take comfort in the fact that her chorus hasn't elected to wear red ties.
