The “tabi” design is used for all manner of footwear in Japan (home of Asics). These days it is mostly the well heeled contruction worker or martial arts student using them.

One of my professors at uni used to wear shoes like that. It would always give me the creeps when she’d waddle into the classroom with them on.

Living in Nike Land, (Portland) I see many a foot wearing the Nike version of this sneaker (?) They always put me in mind of goats and other cloven-hooved beasts.
