Chalk it Up

Kei Igawa

Pinstripes* like this either show you to be a gangster (think: Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls) or the newest member of the New York Yankees. Also note the young ballplayer’s awful tie and unkempt hair.

*Technically, chalk stripes.

Izzy – does an attractive pinstripe even exist? I’ve always detested them for the very reason you mention. But if you could show me one that’s attractive it would be enlightenment I’d appreciate!

Personall, Phyllis, I’ve always cared for the pinstripes that are so tiny and understated that you can’t even really see them until you are standing immediately next to the man wearing them.

I love pinstripes; I even love chalkstripes. But it definitely takes a certain amount of panache to carry them off with conviction. [hee! "conviction!" for the Nathan Detroit]. The youngster in the photo demonstrates by the beigeness of his tie that he lacks sufficient belief in his suit to wear it with any comfort.
