Really Thick Skinned

elephant-skin shoes

Should you ever need to cross the Alps a la Hannibal, here is a weird but rare pair of elephant-skin shoes from Johnston & Murphy. Alas, they don’t come in jumbo size.

Is trade in elephant skin legal? I’m pretty sure it’s not…

I would hope trade in elephant hides is legal – elephant cowboy boots are not at all uncommon. They were quite popular in the late ’80s.

Some googling reveals that trade in elephant hide was made illegal in 1989, by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), but became legal again in 1997, when the status of elephants under the treaty was changed. link
