The reason older men dress like this is that it hides their belly and lack of muscle tone. Also, those aren't dress shorts. Outside of Bermuda, there really isn't such a thing as dress shorts. They're just khakis golf shorts. But yes, don't be afraid to wear dark socks with appropriate shoes.
