Decline and Fall

By Izzy

According to the Drudge Report, on Monday at around 7:30 pm, Republican Congressman Gary Miller strode on the floor of the House during a vote wearing a loose-fitting Hawaiian shirt, linen pants, and slippers.  Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (not exactly a paragon of proper dress herself) rebuked him by noting, “The chair must remind Members that the proper standard of dress in the chamber is business attire, which includes both coat and tie for gentlemen.”

Izzy fears for his country.

Oh, for heaven’s sake, cut short your fit of the vapors. This is the floor of the House, not someplace comparatively classy like an IHOP. In the past, canes wielded as clubs have been all the rage on the House floor, and linen pants are less of an outrage against sense than any given statement by the censorious Rep. Lee.

I sincerely hope he has a good excuse, like being mauled by a pack of wild dogs on the way to the House, resulting in his suit being in tatters and having to slap on the beach clothes in his trunk as a last resort.
