Charlie Wilson’s Wardrobe

Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson’s WarCharlie Wilson in a military shirt

Opening in theaters today, Charlie Wilson’s War tells the true story of a good-for-nothing congressman who redeemed himself by living out his military fantasies through the Mujahideen’s fight against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. When Izzy saw the above still from the movie, he thought it was clever to costume the protagonist (played by Tom Hanks) in a military-style shirt, complete with epaulets and two front pockets. But a quick search uncovered that that was how Wilson, a self-caricature, actually dressed. Any would-be larger-than-life characters, take note.

And the suspenders run under the epulets, meaning he had to manually unbutton and button them on his shirt. That’s quite a look! Not a good one, mind you, but still.

could you please tell me where I can buy the smashing button-down, epaulet great shirts Charlie Wilson wore in the movie. At times I was paying more attention to his shirts than to the movie…….I desparately want them…..thank you.

I think these shirts are absolutely hideous and disgusting and anyone thinking the contrary (Mary Claire from Maryland take note) should be sent to fashion school for a year. Even with the strange dress sense of the 70’s and 80’s I cannot remember anyone wearing such awful shirts as these. The braces/suspenders worn inside the epaulets are quite sickening. Wilson clearly was/is a man with bad taste!

No matter what those who don’t like them think or say, I think and say the shirts that Hanks wore in the movie were and look fantastic in many circumstances. I wouldn’t wear them with suspenders, but would with and without ties and certain good wool dress pants, “chinos” and jeans. I have for decades and do so now wear similar ones – by Polo RL – absent the button-down collars. If anyone knows where to get the ones Hanks wore in the movie (with or without French cuffs!) please let folks know…
