Monsieur de Pompadour
By IzzyThe poet Walt Whitman once rhapsodized:
Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)
But that apologia for inconsistency surely doesn’t excuse Sean Penn’s combining a 1950s rockabilly pompadour with a nineteenth-century-style shirt and tie. To Izzy’s eyes, chronological contradictions can be the most disagreeable.

I think the pompadour outdates the rockabilly era by quite a bit. Maybe even back to the 19th century.

I dunno. The hair/wardrobe combo he’s sporting looks almost exactly like some Andrew Jackson pictures I vaguely remember. Or Edgar Allen Poe. Either way, not as chronologically contradictory as advertised.
Perhaps it’s that his hair isn’t really a rockabilly pompadour, as it appears to lack the requisite pomade. It’s not slicked against the side of his head or anything. No . . . this is Andrew Jackson all the way.

Well, should David Tennant tire of playing Doctor Who, the Sean can take over for him.
He is coming to look rather like the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee:

Pop some steroids to make his forehead a bit bigger and he’d be perfect to play abe lincoln.
